summer daze

You know I must be in the thick of a 34 degree summer repose when my blog ideas aren’t quick to the tip of my brain. I am finally slowing down. Less concerned about a clean floor–how can one maintain that with little feet sloshing through sprinkled grass, flowerbeds, then the kitchen? Who wants to wash up the breakfast dishes when they can be stacked, along with lunch dishes, snack dishes and lemonade pitcher until after dinner? My miniature Venus fly trap will take care of my seasonal kitchen companions, the fruit flies.

The schedule is pure guide, not to be adhered to when I could spend one more half hour leisurely watering the pumpkins, the potted tomatoes, and my feet (forceful breaks in the watering hose). With or without schedule, we’re never without some idea of what to do.

It’s simple, but don’t they say the best things in life are free (and simple)? We spend our days pulling peas and raspberries and making batches of tropical Jello…not cause I like it, but because the four year old wants to cook.

The older kiddos would rather be more adventurous, so we made our own raspberry, apricot and strawberry jam–an endeavour that is significantly more pricey than nearly everything store-bought. This might not be so if our fruit didn’t come from the market. Oh for enough space for a south facing fruit tree. But the vibrant glow of rubies and tangerine are the summer apparel for my kitchen window in those jars of jam!

We’ve ventured into Breyer’s territory too. Crushing strawberries, adding spoonfuls of coconut extract, thickly shredded coconut and loads and loads of cream: we’ve made ice cream. The extra Kitchen Aid attachment would prevent the half hour defrost before we scooped it into dessert bowls, but the flavour is just as good.

Ode to summer: you send savoury flavours, lulling leisure; you may stay as long as you like. Please stay. Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
