“Put the iPod on the dock please!” An admonition I’ve said many times…today;) it’s easy to resort to ‘screen play’…I’m not immune. But life exists beyond a screen. And a quiet life too.

In this day and age, boredom is hard to come by. But for anything truly clever to emerge, huge swaths of time are necessary. Huge swaths of time to think up schemes and patent-potential productions.

Living in new surroundings, like we’ve been doing these last few weeks, requires new activities and new friends. The process can be somewhat slow in the beginning…so time must be filled in creative ways.

Though I’d happily contented myself in responding with the traditional, “If you’re bored, there’s always something to clean”…. I have long responded now with “Boredom is good. Free time to come up with new ideas and activities”.

Time for…

1. Meeting new friends…equine, canine or otherwise.

2. Baking pies…

3. And coffee cakes…

4. And bread…

5. Playing chess (okay so he’s always done this–but now he’s trying to let me win–what does that say about my chess skill?)

6. Gardening (okay, so actually this was a consequence for her…for me it’s fun)…

7. Playing dress-up…

8. Hoola hooping & horsey back rides…

9. Visiting neighbour’s…

10. Painting an outdoor stage (and awaiting a Shakespeare production of Merchant of Venice).

11. Planting seedlings…

12. Preparing picnics & hot dog roasts (less work for me;)

12. And loads of hikes…

Open spaces breed a bounty of new fun.

  1. Funny I was just talking to two friends last night about letting our kids get bored and that it’s ok. We went to my uncles funeral Tuesday and it ended up being a long afternoon with visiting family they didn’t know and sitting through a 2 plus service with half in german. It was a no iPod zone and they did great! Life can be boring, but that’s when you get creative and have time to think! Thanks!!!!
