Building your business while you homeschool isn’t just a dream — it’s a real, doable path.
But if you’ve ever felt caught between homeschooling your kids and growing your own passion project, that tug-of-war is well-known territory — and I know it firsthand.
How Building Your Business While You Homeschool Started at My Starbucks Office
In the early days of homeschooling, I craved space just to think.
Every Wednesday night, I packed up my journal, grabbed a latte, and settled into a corner booth at Starbucks.
It wasn’t just the pumpkin spice latte pulling me in. It was the quiet.
A place to hear myself think — two consecutive thoughts without interruption.
And while it often took a while to calm the swirl in my brain, that quiet corner became a lifeline.
From Personal Processing to Professional Writing
Fast forward a few years:
A friend of a friend needed a writer for a local mom magazine. I jumped at the chance. Paid work! Real deadlines!
I bought a brown leather bag, snagged a few hotel pens from my husband’s desk, and turned my Starbucks booth into my “office” — $5.42 rent, paid in lattes and scones.
For the first time, I felt like a professional writer.
The Guilt That Comes With Building Your Business While You Homeschool
But as my writing grew, so did something else: guilt.
Shouldn’t I want to be with my kids every moment?
Was it selfish to carve out time for my own dreams?
At home, switching from homeschool mom to business builder wasn’t seamless.
It felt like every hat change cost me energy I didn’t have.
I thought, Maybe I could do so much more if I just stopped homeschooling. 🤦♀️🙃🧐😜
(Yes, I really thought that sometimes.)
Lessons From the Long Road
A lot has changed since those early years. (Three of my four kids have now graduated!)
But one thing remains true:
And the right questions create that clarity.
When you’re building your business while homeschooling, clarity is your lifeline.
Questions That Can Change Everything
Ask yourself:
- What would your ideal day look like if homeschooling, household tasks, and business had their own peaceful rhythm — without the chaos of constant multitasking?
- What’s one source of guilt you could eliminate today that would give you the most peace?
- When was the last time you felt fully present in one role — without your mind running in three directions?
- What business tasks keep falling off your list because urgent family needs always take over?
- How would your family thrive differently if your work time and homeschool time had clear, respected boundaries?
- What’s the hidden cost of trying to do everything at once?
- When have you felt most fulfilled, and what systems were (or weren’t) in place back then?
