Christmas songs and memories

IMG_7095[1]I’m dreaming of a white Christmas, like ones I used to know…

One Christmas, we got snow in spades, or shall I say, in shovels. So. Much. Snow. Four feet almost to its height. Running down our 200 foot driveway was a lone space shoveled for a walkway. We parked at the top, and walked down to our cozy little home. It was just like a childhood winter, etching out snow forts and protecting them with snowballs.

Silent night, holy night…

There’s nothing like a cozy fire burning with lit candles and a backdrop of tree lights, through the window, oodles of trees trimmed in God’s deco of the season: fresh snow. What about a glass of mulled wine? Okay, a glass of cab sauv will do. A great book? Might I recommend a favourite: The Impossible Lives of Greta Wells. A few great people: my hubby and kiddos.

Away in a Manger…

Lighting candles on the advent wreath we’ve owned since the Christmas before we were married…still burning the same four purple tapers and light of the world candle… We’re remembering the gift of peace, love, joy and hope that was imparted by the gift of baby Jesus. We remember it all year, but especially at this season.

Oh Holy Night, the stars are brightly shining, it is the night of our dear Saviour’s birth, Long lay the world in sin and error pining, Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth.

Since December 25, 336, the first recorded celebration of Christmas, ‘natus Christus in Betleem Judeae’, just after the winter solstice as the earth enlivens little by little with sunlight returning, we celebrate the light of the world, Jesus.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, it’s the most hap-hap-happiest season of all…

Why? I think because though so many celebrate Christmas for so many reasons, we all are celebrating, choosing to engage in merriment. The energy of it all makes it the most wonderful time of the year.

(Well, we don’t all think that…)

Have yourself a merry little Christmas,

Let your heart be light

From now on your troubles will be out of sight,

Have yourself a merry little Christmas

Make the Yutletide gay

From now on your troubles will be miles away

Here we are as in olden days

Happy golden days of yore

Faithful friends who are dear to us

They gather near to us once more

Through the years we will all be together and if the fates allow

Hang a shining star upon the highest bough,

And have yourself a merry little Christmas
